THE STORY BEHIND

Overlooking the Baru Volcano, Finca Agricola Geisha of Gonzalo and Irma Palenzuela is located in Alto Jaramillo at an altitude of 1380-2100 meters above sea level.
Unlike many farms, Finca Agricola Geisha was not contemplated as a business venture, but rather as a project borne out of passion of a recently retired man who found joy in his new hobby. Gonzalo Palenzuela and his wife Irma fell in love with the new project, even though they had to face many challenges in learning about, growing and even drinking coffee. The farm expanded into dozens of acres of land, which Irma and Gonzalo filled with some of the most sought-after varietals on the market, such as Geisha and Pacamara.
Grown in the area abundant with misty rain and sunshine, their coffee is sustained by the gifts of Mother Nature. Streams flow through the harvested fields and irrigate the soil. Agricola Geisha’s coffee is shade-grown, surrounded by plantain and avocado trees.

The plants on Finca Agricola Geisha are cared for with meticulous attention, from seedlings to maturity. They are fertilised with natural products, maintaining the farm organic. “We are a family-run business, our name and our reputation are important: nowadays, three generations of our family are involved in the production and will carry our legacy,” they say. “Our goal is to keep our farm pure and wholesome in order to consistently produce award-winning specialty coffee”.

When the Palenzuelas participated in Best of Panama for the first time, they had to name their coffee. And in a burst of inspiration and honouring the tradition, Irma Palenzuela remembered an old photo of her mother-in-law, Doña Elvira, preparing coffee. And that was it - that was the moment this outstanding lot was born.

THE VARIETY

Rare, exclusive and fetching a heavy price tag, Gesha is often associated with coffees from Panama, while, in fact, the cultivation of the Gesha varietal began there as late as in the 1960s.

Gesha is an original variety of coffee that was discovered in the 1930s in the mountains around the Southwestern town of Gesha, Ethiopia. Gesha trees grow tall and can be distinguished by their beautiful elongated leaves. The quality of this coffee can be drastically improved when grown at extremely high elevation.

The Geisha revolution brought about an intense search for Geisha among coffee buyers and a primal pilgrimage to Ethiopia to find the source of that flavor. The roads those buyers traveled brought them in a wood in far western Ethiopia near a small town called Gesha in the forests where coffee was born and still grows wild.

Gesha 1931 comes from this place.

Its name reflects the place and year it was collected by scientists who fanned out on a research expedition in Ethiopia to catalogue its coffee varieties.
